Just a little fact about the Tucker engine you may not know

Postby VTTucker » Wed Jan 22, 2003 12:49 am

Hi everyone,

I just go the "Tucker" DVD the other day and it had been a long time since I had seen the movie. The DVD has some really nice special features by the way.

Anyway while watching the movie I recognised the Tucker flat 6 engine as being the same engine I worked on in Aviation Tech in High School. It was a Franklin flat 6 and the engine we had was from an old Bell 46 helicopter. This was the same helecopter you see at the beginning of the TV show "MASH", the copter with the big bubble on the front and the guys runs out hunched over to get the wounded out.

I went through and read most posts on this board and did not see where anyone made refrence to this so I thought it might interest some of you. Bell made many of these copters so finding an engine at a aircraft scrap yard might prove easier than you think.

Take care,
Oops - sorry

Sorry that was a Bell 47 helecopter, there is no such thing as a 46.
Franklin Aircooled

Postby jfollis640 » Sat Jan 25, 2003 1:36 am

You are correct, the Aircooled Motors’ FRANKLIN 6 ALV-335 engine converted to water cooling was used in the Tucker '48.

Aircooled Motors of Syracuse, New York, was purchased as TUCKER-owned subsidiary in 1948.
Tucker Motor

People need to get the Tucker DVD. The special features are worth it. You get an original Tucker promo film which shows one Tucker after being rolled 3 times at 90+mph that still runs. That proves the fact that the Tucker was the car that was safe and if you flip you can still drive home. What a design.

Edited by: tuckercar at: 2/5/03 6:15:25 pm

Tucker Engines

Postby jfollis640 » Sat Mar 15, 2003 10:39 pm

The Aircooled Motors "Franklin" engines were used in several aircraft as well as the Tucker car. Heller UH-12 Helicopters, Bell 47 Helicopters, Stinson Aircraft, Bellanca Aircraft as well as others.

You might have better luck trying to locate one with a vintage aircraft supplier. The original engines for use in the Tucker are very hard to come by and demand a premium. (You're not going to "just find one" for a few thousand bucks)
Dave Cammack Collection

Postby plancor 792 » Mon Jun 16, 2003 5:20 pm

Are you a member of The Tucker Automobile Club Of America? If you were you would have answers to many of your questions. As for The Dave Cammack Collection, it is located outside Washington, D.C. and is open by scheduling an appointment with him. He has Tucker Serial Nos. 1001, 1022 and 1026 along with a Tucker test chassis, several Tucker engines including the aircooled one that was to go into Tucker 1007 but never made it due to Tucker shutting down. Dave also has many Tucker related items. Please do not call or contact him wanting to purchase items as none of his collection is for sale. It has all been donated to the Antique Automobile Club of America and will some day end up in Hershey, Pa. AACA is currently constructing a building to house the Cammack Collection.
tucker engines

Postby jay vinton » Mon Jul 19, 2004 8:34 am

In response to where the airplane grave yard is, it is Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona. I am not sure of the restrictions on getting on base or purchasing parts or aircraft, probably have to have a salvage ticket or similar.

Franklin's Still in Business

Postby Brian Drake » Sun Jul 25, 2004 9:22 am

Franklin is still in business. www.franklinengines.com/

They don't build the same engine as was used in the Tucker, but they do have an engine which looks identical (the only difference that I know of is that it's got a slightly larger displacement).
